Ondra Fort

  home

The actual history and age of this fort is not known. According to oral traditions this strategically important fort was built some 1000 years ago to defend this area from the invasions of neighboring principalities Nagar and Hunza to the south and from Kyrgyz raiders from the north. At that time this area was an independent principality under the rule of local Mirs. It is also narrated that the fort was built during the reign of Mir Silum Khan II, however, there is no evidence in any historical account. Strategically it has been built high above Gulmit and Ghulkin and where people can not easily access and has clear view to the whole surrounding areas. The people of Gulmit previously used to stay in this fort as the ruins are still witnessing the residences of the people. A watchman was in charge of looking out for enemies and messengers were posted along the Hunza River to warn of any invading armies using fire signals. In case of any invasions the people pushed large rocks and boulders down the valley. To secure water supply under a longer siege a stream coming from the Gulmit Glacier was diverted to create a small lake just below the fort. The bed of this lake can still be seen beside the trail when hiking up from Kamaris Village.

It is said that up to recent time most of the houses and the main wall was in good condition but as people were not aware of the importance of this site therefore they ruined this and the woods were used for fuel. The fort is now loosing its identity therefore it is need of the time to restore it immediately. Because this is a precious historical place as well as a very beautiful viewpoint to the landscape from Passu to Shishkat.
