Old Wheat Grinding Mills

In order to grind the Barley, buckwheat and wheat a special type of grinding mills that runs on power of water were constructed just below the sloppy areas where the water channel irrigates the lands of majority of agricultural lands. These mills were constructed on main irrigation channels in every villages. During olden time each family were having their own grinding mills where people grind their grains during summer time and store it for the rest of the season. It is said that in order to grind rrains grains were also taken from Central Hunza to Gulmit to grind it for the family of Mirs.

 

However, nowadays people purchase flour from markets so the use of these old mills are rare in very remote areas. Most of these old mills are now in very bad condition and will destroy within few years.
