Introduction of Diamond Jubilee Schools

  home

As stated earlier that from the imperial school only a few influential got benefit and the common people remained deprived of their basic rights and  became victim of inhuman manners of the state machinery.  During the Golden jubilee celebration of Sir Sultan Muhammad Shah, Aga Khan III, the Mir of Hunza were also invited to Mumbai, due to  health problem he sent his representative, a well known scholar Qudrat-ullah Baig to represent him. During this historical event Aga Khan III met the representative of Mir of Hunza and investigated about the prevailing socio-economic conditions of the inhabitants of Hunza. He then wrote a letter to Mir advising him to provide educational facilities to the people of his state. And also announced a grant of Rs 12,000 per month for this purpose: 8,000 for schools and 4,000 as scholarships for deserving students. Finally in Aug 1946 under the name of Diamond Jubilee School system a network of about 45 schools were established not only in Hunza state but allover the present day Ghizer district also. Under this system in Hunza 16 primary and 1 middle school was established and most of the teachers were just primary passed from the imperial time schools. Besides, 7 schools in Ponial, 9 in Gopis, 8 in Yasin and 4 schools were established in Ishkoman. From this point the history of education got a new direction but the people were still not aware of the importance of education. They were still giving the traditional activities preference on education. Parents thought that what their child would do after getting education because at that time an educated person could have a job to perform Khalifa- the person who performs religious rituals. The network of Diamond Jublee schools is still functioning through out the region and up till now has produced thousands of high caliber professionals who are working not only in Pakistan but in International organizations also.
