Female Education |

Initially whole concentration were put around male education while totally ignoring females. Late Sultan Khan (a local scholar) sensed the importance of female education and started to create awareness among the local community. A group of local people under the leadership of Late Yousuf Baig met the then Mir of Hunza, Jamal Khan and got approval for a female school. Thus in August 1966 for the first time education for girls was started in the lawn of Central Jamat Khana Gulmit. A local primary passed teacher Fida Ali Qiblan was appointed on a monthly salary of Rs 30. Initially he forced the female students from their homes to attend the school and he succeeded to increase the number of students from 15 to 30. Later on in 1977 Mrs. Bibi Nigar were appointed as the first local government female teacher. After the construction of new building for the Boys High School the old boys school building was reserved for girls’ middle school. After then 3 types of education systems were providing up to metric level education to females: the government primary section, the AKES Middle section and the community high school section. In 2000 the government constructed some new classrooms and renovated the old boys schools building for girls but the school is still not up-graded to even middle level. However the board displayed in front of the school shows it as a Govt. Girls High School but there are only 7 government teachers for the middle section only. In April 27, 2004 AKES closed primary section from this school and the teachers were shifted to other schools. Thus the local community is facing great problems as after that the students are charging high fees in order to arrange community teachers for both middle and high school sections. According to education department sources the proposal for up gradation of the school is under final stage and they have submitted its PC IV to finance division for approval. The institution since its inception in 1966 educated about 1202 girls. Latter on government as well as AKES,P opened many middle and primary level schools all over the valley. However, the recent mushroom growth of community based English medium schools have changed the quality of education both for males and females. The opportunities for female higher education is still scarce in the region and majority of the population cannot afford to send their children to other cities therefore majority of female discontinue their education after matriculation. There is still not a single high schools through out the widely scattered Gojal valley. The female education were continued in the houses of different people and when in 1973 a new building was constructed for upgraded boys’ high school the girls were shifted to the old boys school. As the boys school was the only for the entire Gojal Tehsil thus the building again became smaller and in 1990 a new boys school was constructed on 35 kanal community donated land. |
