Yashvindhun Engraved Boulders & Remains of Settlement

  home

This site is dated back to 10th & 11th Century. The site is located  about 3 km from the main Passu settlement in a deep depression of the Passu glacier. The KKH passes through the site in "W" shape with new Yushvindhun settlement at the bottom. According to research this area was inhibited during the era when the glacier level was higher by 300 feet from its current position. from where the channel was constructed from west to east to feed the terraces of the site. The site was a permanent settlement as visible from the channel fields and foundation of the human, animal and storage spaces. The boulder contains the images of ibex and a few human figures.

The engraved boulders with the agricultural terraces remains are located on the western side. The built spaces foundation remains are located at the western side towards the river. This site reflects the time when most of the land was under glaciers and decrease in the level of the ice sheets. With melting of the glaciers the historic routes were shifted and the the level of ice fell by a 100 meters and the glacier receding started. The site shows the cultural interventions happened centuries ago reflecting the craftsmanship with stone tools where the cultural engineering was not dominant on the natural materials as most of the materials used in the construction of the residential and agricultural spaces are in their natural shape.

The site was damaged during the construction of the KKH as the extracted material from the mountain anad teh glacial moraine was dumped on the top of the eastern sides of the site.
