Mixing tequila with soda is one of the most invigorating ways to enjoy a great tasting tequila. The tequila soda is a simple highball that’s become rather popular in bars, but you don’t have to go out to get it since it’s extremely easy to make at home.
Similar to the whiskey highball and gin and tonic, the tequila soda is a pour-and-serve mixed drink. It’s excellent with the slight oakiness of an aged reposado tequila, and nice with a blanco tequila as well. As the margarita has proven for years, fresh lime juice is a perfect companion to tequila, and the soda transforms the combination into a refreshing beverage.
Club soda is one of the best options for the tequila soda. It doesn’t add flavor to detract from the tequila and lime, but rather enhances that dynamic duo and brings out their best qualities. If you do prefer a little extra flavor, seltzer with a hint of lime or grapefruit are fabulous choices. For a sweeter touch, try ginger ale.
2 ounces blanco or reposado tequila
1/2 ounce lime juice, from 2 lime wedges
3 to 4 ounces club soda, to taste
Lime wheel, or wedge, for garnish
Gather the ingredients.
In a highball glass filled with ice, pour the tequila and squeeze in the juice of 2 lime wedges.
Top with the soda.
Garnish with a lime wheel or wedge. Serve and enjoy.
- Top-shelf tequilas are not necessary for the tequila soda, so you can save some money on this drink. Don’t go too low in quality though; choose a good mid-range tequila that you wouldn’t mind drinking straight.
- Fresh lime juice is best and it should be adjusted to your personal taste. With different tequilas, you may need a little more or a little less.
- If you like a tart drink, make this cocktail with blanco tequila and rub the lime garnish around the rim of the glass for an extra bite with each sip.
- To ensure your drinks are always carbonated, buy soda in smaller bottles unless you’ll be making a lot of drinks in a short period of time. Chill the club soda and open it very slowly because it fizzes up and will easily overflow.
- If you switch the club soda to grapefruit soda, you’ll have created a paloma. You can also squeeze a little fresh grapefruit juice into the tequila soda for an extra hint of citrus.
- Infuse the tequila soda with flavor by using a flavored tequila. For instance, apple-cinnamon tequila makes an excellent autumn drink, while lemongrass-ginger tequila adds an interesting background flavor. Eliminate the lime if the flavors don’t match.
- Make a tequila collins by switching to lemon juice and sweetening the drink with agave nectar.
- The tamarind and tequila is a similar sparkling highball, made with tamarind nectar, simple syrup, and ginger ale.
How Strong Is a Tequila Soda?
The tequila soda is a relatively mild cocktail, and pouring more or less soda will change the strength. It typically mixes up to about 13 percent ABV (26 proof), which is equivalent to drinking a glass of wine.

There’s no doubt, that frequently drinking a lot of alcohol will negatively affect your health and weight loss goals.
Alcohol can negatively affect your testosterone levels:
Testosterone is one of the most important muscle building hormones. This is important, because a body with more lean muscle, boosts your metabolism, thus allows you to burn more calories and fat, even while at rest.
Unfortunately, excessive consumption of alcohol can negatively affect the production of testosterone. Even with just a few drinks of alcohol a day, you can lower levels of testosterone, making it much harder for you to build muscle, and ultimately lose weight.
Drinking alcohol quickly increases your calorie consumption:
As you know, drinking your calories is one of the no-no’s when it comes to weight loss.
Typically alcohol contains 7 calories for every gram.
Plus, this 7 calories per gram doesn’t include whatever you’re mixing with the alcohol with.
Most beer contains approximately 150 calories per bottle.
Drinking a 6 pack during the game adds approximately 900 extra empty calories to your diet.
Drinking 4 single rum and cokes adds approximately 1,200 extra empty calories to your diet.
On top of these empty alcohol calories, the majority of time when you’re drinking alcohol, you’re probably not snacking out of a vegetable tray.
Alcohol’s affect on your energy levels:
Whether you feel hungover or not, the next day you always pay the price for drinking too much alcohol.
If you’re like most people you would skip the gym, and go out to your favorite fast food restaurant for some greasy hangover food to make yourself feel better.
Or even if go to the gym, your strength, energy, and overall performance just seems off, even if you aren’t hungover.
If you’re looking to improve your physique, but have no aspirations to be on a cover of a magazine, and don’t have any severe health problems, you can safely enjoy 2-4 drinks of alcohol per week.
Just remember, alcohol calories do count, so don’t forget to account from them if you’re counting calories.
My go-to alcoholic preferences include:
– Red wine (I prefer pinot noir)
– Vodka water with lemon or lime
– Tequila on the rocks with lime
– An occasional beer if I’m watching sports
Which Alcohol Is Good For Weight Loss?
When it comes to alcohol that is good for weight loss, the simpler the better.
– Vodka (97 calories)
– Rum (97 calories)
– Tequila (105 calories)
– Whiskey (105 calories)
– Bourbon (105 calories)
– Scotch (105 calories)
– Gin (110 calories)
What you mix these shots with is the make or break for weight loss.
Always choose a zero calorie mixer like water and club soda, then add a splash of flavor by adding the juice of a lemon or lime.
Stay away from sugar bombs such as frozen cocktails, sugary juices, syrups, tonic, and soda as the carbohydrates will not only quickly rack up the calorie count, but the sugar crashes will also make you attack the snack tray.
